Hand surgery and surgery of peripheral nerves

Consultations are offered in the outpatient clinics by our consultants and senior registrars as well as the private outpatient clinics of PD Dr. E. Voegelin. Details towards patient accommodation, on site and journey descriptions are provided.

The specialty of hand surgery and peripheral nerve surgery covers a wide spectrum of elective and emergency interventions. Those include acute trauma, posttraumatic reconstruction, treatment of tumor diseases, congenital disorders, inflammatory diseases of the hand and the peripheral nerve system. Besides the primary aim to restore or improve the function of an injured, disabled or diseased hand we also address the aesthetic outcome.

The specialist training for hand surgeons is an independent specialization since 2007, requiring two years of basic surgical training followed by four years of training in an accredited hand surgery unit of a teaching hospital. However all our consultants and senior registrars are fully qualified in either general surgery, plastic surgery or orthopedic surgery before specializing in hand surgery. The University hospital in Bern is one of six main teaching hospitals in Switzerland qualified for the 4 years of specialist training which is required in hand surgery.
